The New Drake

I think we can all agree that neither of the Drake’s restaurants are a disappointment, but the true difference at the relatively new Drake OneFifty is their new vs. old character change that still exceeds at infusing the space with their funky and eclectic character that everyone in this city is thriving on these days.  I was dying to try this place! I’m a sucker for the old vs. new contrast in décor so I was instantly captivated when walking amongst the tables and finally sitting down at our table by the window.  The cozy banquettes and thick wood tables were filled with mostly young professionals that needed a drink (or two) after a long day at work; who can blame them? The selection on the menu seemed to be like some of the typical trendy menus I’ve seen around the city, but of course just like anything the Drake does, there had to be a twist.  A Big Mac Tartare? I’m serious, this was on the menu and despite that I’m a huge fan, …

A Weekend Away at Mont Sainte-Anne

An excellent weekend to kick off reading week!  With my brother’s mogul competition taking place at Mont Sainte-Anne I figured it would be a great opportunity to spend some time with him and my parents while cheering him on at his provincial event.  He made the podium both days!  A huge congrats to him. I’ve skied Mont Sainte-Anne on many different occasions over my skiing years but I’d have to say that this past weekend was the best of them all.  We were out early every morning and skied freshly groomed corduroy and bumps for hours before they looked tracked; there were basically no crowds! Our Saturday (Valentine’s Day) had to be the best of them all!  Although the weather was cold, the snow was great, there were blue skies, and we were greeted with champagne and cheese and crackers as soon as the ski day was done.  It’s pretty hard for any day to beat that! Another Valentine bonus was the gift we received while going up the gondola.  A little box filled with …

MTK for Winterlicious

Mildred’s Temple Kitchen continues to be one of my favourite places to eat!  Their brunch is probably one of the most known in the city but their enthusiasm about Winterlicious might even out-do it! During the two weeks of the event, they only offer their Winterlicious menu which they have clearly poured their heart and souls into.  This was one of my most anticipated restaurants during Winterlicious and even with my high expectations; they blew me and all my anticipations away! Greeting us with warm roasted garlic, cheddar, and thyme biscuits to start it all off, you can tell right away that you’re at Mildred’s Temple Kitchen because that kind of attention to detail and freshly made goodness is unlike anywhere else. I was torn but eventually settled on the tea cured trout appetizer while also sharing tastes for the pork rillettes.  The trout itself was very good but the accoutrements were the essential part to completing the dish.  So many different textures made the mouth dance with every bite; onions and apple slices for …

The Locale: Marché 27

The last couple days have been busy; I’m still on the mend and I’m still working on adjusting my diet to accommodate my lack of chewing capabilities.  With this in mind and my sudden craving of tartare, our next destination was Marché 27. If you’ve read my food truck summary you’ve seen that Route 27 was a favourite from the summer and it happens to be that this restaurant is the mecca of it all.   (Here’s the link for those interested click here) On a quiet enclave of Prince Arthur just west of St-Laurent, a little cluster of restaurants were quietly starting to entice hungry lunch-goers.  Without hesitation however we had our sights set on this raw menu gem. When walking in, the minimal décor and chalkboards give the allure of a simple but stylish locale; banquettes run along the length of the room covered in windows letting in the natural light, flanked by grey, black, and white pillows opposite glossy chic, occasional chairs.  The chalkboards facing the section of tables covered every vertical section …
